Every Google Meet user, at some point, must have wished for a private message feature in the application. A feature that should be easy to implement but has not made its way to Google Meet, yet.

That said, in this post, we’ll be taking a look at everything we know about the elusive Google Meet private message feature and how you could possibly get around to chat in private on Google Meet.

Google Meet has slowly replaced the likes of Zoom in most companies as well as educational institutions. This can be credited to the seamless integration between other Google apps such as the Calendar and Gmail.

Moreover, Google is constantly adding new features and improving the user experience on the application with each update.

Matter of fact, we recently reported that Google Meet will be getting support for inter-school video calls and meeting transcripts later this year. And that’s just a scratch on the surface.

Coming back to the option to private message on Google Meet, or rather lack thereof is likely because the search giant does not want to encourage private chats on Google Meet.

This is evident from the answer given out by a Platinum Product Expert on Google’s support forums who suggests that users make use of other messaging clients for private chats.

Of course, this comment isn’t really coming from Google itself, however, it does highlight the possibility that Google might not be considering adding an option to chat individually or privately in Google Meet anytime soon.

Typically, one would suggest that you use Google Chat or other messaging applications if you need to privately chat with someone in the meeting hosted on Meet, but those aren’t the only options.

You could try out the Meet Plus extension available for Chrome that should let you send a private message or chat individually on Google Meet.

Of course, for this to work the person whom you wish to chat with in private on Google Meet must also have the Meet Plus extension installed on their browser.

Needless to say, this isn’t as convenient as it would be if Google simply threw in the option to send a personal message in Google Meet so you wouldn’t have to worry about your teacher or employer watching every message.

While Google has not yet made any official comments on the lack of a private message feature on Meet, it’s highly likely that the feature is missing on purpose.

Since Google Meet is being used by schools and universities around the world, adding the option to allow students to chat privately could be counterproductive.

Having said that, we’ll continue to keep track of the situation and will post an update when more details surface surrounding the missing private message feature on Google Meet.
