Update(October 20):

Backup and Sync’s latest version (3.37) is out, and will be auto-upgraded in a few weeks.

Original Story below:

As highlighted by us last month, Backup and Sync users operating Windows and Mac have been complaining about the client’s excessive CPU consumption for quite some time now.

To investigate the issue further, Google asked the affected users to share their ‘CPU profiles’. While evaluating some of the profiles shared by complainants, the company officially accepted that Backup and Sync is indeed a CPU hungry application.

Here’s the statement from a Google employee:

As you can see, though the company is stressing that the client’s next update (version 3.37) will make the application more CPU friendly, it also raised hands helplessly, conveying that the update will only make the situation better, instead of completely resolving the high CPU consumption issue from root.

Sadly, as it stands, Backup and Sync will continue to eat up excessive CPU. And there’s no way you can escape this problem, at-least for a foreseeable future.
