Update (January 23):

Those who wish to get over the loud tone glitch before the stable version of Google app rolls out (which will be in February) can enroll into the beta version of the app.

Original story:

November 2017 concluded with complaints drenching the official Google Search and Assistant help forum about an irritating Google Assistant glitch that causes the service to produce a loud dial tone kind of noise/DTMF on activation until there’s a reply from the virtual assistant. What’s relieving is the company has been actively addressing the problem, and has now located a fix for the same.

This morning, Google employee Andy broke the news that a fix has been identified, and will be included in Google app v7.19, which will be out sometime in February.

We believe we’ve found a fix for this issue that will be included in version 7.19 of the Google app

Furthermore he also added that

Due to the production schedule of the app however, the fix will likely not be live until around early February

To give you some details, the aforementioned loud tone/DFMT issue has been put across by different Android device users operating Google Assistant, either with Bluetooth headsets/speakers or car head units.

It’s worth mentioning that the problem appears to have been triggered by a recent Google app update (7.17 as per the reports), as many of those affected confirmed that uninstalling the update or rolling back to an older version solved the problem from them.

The issue seems widespread, as hundreds are reporting it on the official forum alone. Presumably because of that, it caught Google’s attention within a comparatively short time span. Andy (who is also the Community Manager at the official Assistant help forum) had acknowledged the glitch on January 3.

While it’s appeasing that a fix will be rolled out, those affected will have to wait until next month. Meanwhile, the only temporary solution is to either uninstall Google app’s v7.17 and revert back to an older version.

Rest assured, we are keeping a tab on all related developments (be it regarding the this loud tone problem or other issues plaguing Assistant), and will update as and when something news-worthy occurs.
