Who doesn’t love food? The success of reality shows like the multiple adaptations of Master Chef, Top Chef and Gordon Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen, etc is proof enough that people just love to see food on screen.
When it comes to anime, however, food on screen comes with a slight twist of a typical ‘sports shounen’. Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma, anime world’s reigning food-based anime returns to your screens this April with season 5 on Netflix. Season 5 is also going to be the last season for this anime, after which the story folds.
As per Netflix Anime Japan, season 5 will begin streaming every Wednesday from April 15, 2020. Simultaneously the show will be premiere on TOKYO MX, BS11, and AbemaTV from April 10, 2020.
In fact, according to the anime’s official Twitter handle, “Shokugeki no Soma Gono Sara” is being considered for distribution and broadcast across streaming platforms such as AbemaTV (video), d anime store, dTV, Hulu, Netflix, U-NEXT, unlimited animations, etc.
Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma is a Japanese shounen manga series written by Yūto Tsukuda and illustrated by Shun Saeki. It has been serialized and licensed for the west by Viz Media. So far the manga has been adapted into four anime seasons, with the first premiering in 2015.
What can we expect from Food Wars! Shokugeki No Soma final season?
Set in the super-elite cooking school “Totsuki Saryo Culinary Institute”, it tells the story of Soma Yukihira who strives to cook every day to surpass his father in culinary skills.
Season 5 or Fifth Plate, as the anime tends to number its seasons is expected to deviate from its conventional narrative style Plot-wise it is expected to cover the school’s 5th term when the school receives an invitation to the world culinary competition “THE BLUE”.
Going by online chatter among the manga readers, the final ‘Blue Arc’ hasn’t proved to be as promising as the rest. Shokugeki No Soma readers have often complained that the arc pegs most of it’s development to a controversial character, who is introduced very late.
The poor handling of its development has earned the final arc of this otherwise entertaining series poor rating. Will the anime adaptation be able to salvage the finale season for this popular food anime, or will it leave a bad after taste after performing so well among the international viewers?
We shall find out this April.
