[Update: Fix released] Fix for Asus ROG Phone 2 massive battery drain & OnePlus Nord reset issues should be coming soon

The Asus ROG Phone 2 was one of the most powerful smartphones when it was launched back in 2019. It was the first device to come with the Snapdragon 855+ SoC. Further, it also has a 120Hz refresh rate display coupled with a 240Hz touch sampling rate.

Even a year later, the device is still a performance beast and can chew through most tasks you can throw at it. Matter of fact, there are hundreds of games that you can play while taking advantage of the 120Hz screen too.

And thanks to the massive 6000 mAh battery under the hood, you can game for several hours without having to worry about plugging the device to a charger.

On paper, the ROG Phone 2 is an impressive device, however, specs don’t necessarily translate into a perfect user experience. Matter of fact, ROG Phone 2 users have faced several issues while using the device.

In August, we reported that the ROG Phone 2 black screen and shutdown issues when gaming or charging the were claimed to be hardware-related.

Further, ROG Phone 2 users aren’t able to play PUBG Mobile with 90fps enabled even though the device is capable of pushing 90fps in the game. More on that here.

Now, the device owners are reporting another major issue related to the battery life of the device. Apparently, the 6000 mAh unit isn’t helpful at the moment since many users are noticing a massive battery drain.

Some reports even suggest that the battery life has almost cut down to half even with no idle time. As per users, it also appears that the CPU usage spikes randomly.

This could possibly be the reason why the battery is draining as quickly as it is. Moreover, as a result of the increase in CPU usage, some users are claiming that the device is overheating.

Fortunately, Asus has not turned a blind eye to the problem at hand. In two separate responses, ZenTalk mods have shed some light on the matter. We’ve added both comments below:

We are looking into it and for the majority it seems to be issue with Google Play (not Asus).

We’ve identified the issue and will issue a FOTA for this issue asap. Expect it next week after passing CTS.

Based on the second response from a moderator, it appears that the fix ROG Phone 2 users won’t have to wait too long for the fix to arrive.

Speaking of which, OnePlus Nord users will also find some solace in knowing that the company is working on a fix for the bug that causes the phone to automatically reset itself.

Of course, this is a major issue and reportedly is affecting several OnePlus Nord users. The company has, however, been quick to release an official statement along with a temporary workaround:

Over the past few days, we’ve received a limited number of reports from OnePlus Nord users facing reboots and subsequent data loss. We’ve been working tirelessly to find the root cause of this issue and to fix it.

Here’s the latest.

Particular software issues may cause OnePlus Nord to run into crash loops – this issue does not directly lead to data loss. However, Android includes a feature called “Rescue Party” which tries to recover the device from those crash loops. When unsuccessful, Rescue Party then reboots the device into recovery mode, which provides options to the user to perform a factory reset. If a user accidentally selects the “Wipe data” option when in recovery mode, user data will be deleted.

Workaround:

We are working on a software update to fix the issue causing the aforementioned crash loops – stay tuned for more updates. In the meantime, if Rescue Party is accidentally triggered, you can long press “Power Key + Volume Up Key” for 10 seconds to force shutdown and exit recovery mode without any data loss.

Since this is a major problem, we expect OnePlus to be on its heels trying to release an OTA update to solve the problem as soon as possible.

We will continue tracking the situation and will post an update once new developments surface for either of the two problems covered here.

In a new post on the ZenTalk forums, it appears that Asus has released a new update for the ROG Phone 2 as version 17.0240.2009.49. According to the Release Notes, the new update fixes the increased power consumption caused by the system.
