Feedly has proved to be the pre-eminent news aggregating platform. Being a one-stop destination for all sorts of news has earned Feedly decent footfall figures.
Things become even easier with an app installed on the devices we interact with on a daily basis. Feedly supports almost all major platforms and operating systems.
Well, apps on Android don’t really become part of controversies or extraordinary situations but we can expect such things when it comes to Apple.
Feedly app finds itself in a similar situation on Apple devices. Be it running on macOS or iOS, things haven’t been doing well in some departments.
A quick look at the Feedly app’s update history on macOS takes us 7 years back in time. Even though it has a native app for Macs, that is barely any different than what the website is.
It appears more of a clone of the website, which is pretty obvious for an app that hasn’t been updated in years.
The story is no different for iOS and iPadOS as the fate of apps for these platforms has more or less been the same.
But since the app on iOS was updated back in December 2020, there’s not much to complain about when weighed against what’s happening with the macOS app.
Users seem to like the mobile version more and it makes sense too. The mobile app of Feedly has seen significant improvements that make it to the top of the list of news aggregators.
This has, no doubt, got the attention of a few curious users, and when questions were put forward to the support, a single-line explanation is what we get out of them.
That is, however, long enough to give us an idea about what Freedly’s future plans are for macOS.
The support says they are working to replace the native Feedly app with a Progressive Web App which would make Feedly’s website version more of a functional one.
Those who are unaware of what a Progressive Web App (PWA) is, check out how Uber’s website efficiently functions to such a large extent that users do not even require a native Uber app installed on their devices.
That’s exactly what a PWA is. A more effective, lesser space-occupying, packed with functional elements alternative of a native app.
This doesn’t justify deserting macOS Feedly app for 7 long years but at least, it explains where the primary focus of Feedly is.
With that said, we will continue to keep a watch on the developments and update you guys as and when we have something.
