At the World Economic Forum 2020 in Davos, Switzerland, Ericsson CEO Borje Ekholm has stated when it comes to 5G technology, no other company is ahead of them.

In fact, Borje further solidified his statement saying, it is a bit difficult to see Ericsson behind any other company when there is no one ahead of them at the moment in terms of 5G technology.

I find it’s a bit difficult to say that we’re behind when I see no one ahead of us.

Ericsson CEO also stated that although Huawei is facing tensions in the market, this does not give Ericsson a “free ride”. Matter of fact, Ekholm also added that it was Ericsson’s equipment, which was first used in North America and Europe.

Notably, Ericsson is a partner with Rogers in Canada and both have started rolling out 5G networks in major cities, but it is not able for public consumption as of yet.

However, Decter Thillien, a senior industry analyst at Fitch Solutions, refuted the claims made by Ekholm and said that Ericsson and Nokia are seen as two strong alternatives to Huawei and there is no other player in the 5G technology.

Huawei is indeed facing tensions from the US government and Canada has also not yet come clean whether they will be allowing Huawei to provide 5G services across the country. Moreover, the UK and Germany are also undecided to let Huawei build their 5G infrastructure in the respective countries.

Ericsson demoed their collaboration with ABB at the WEC 2020, where it showcased how robots can be controlled over a wide distance in real-time using 5G network.

Only time will tell whether which company i.e. Huawei or Ericsson will emerge as the top player in the 5G technology game. Till then, we will have to wait and watch for further developments in this regard.
