Original story (published on February 24, 2023) follows:

Discord, a famous gaming communication platform, has encountered user criticism after its recent feature, Gradient color themes, was sealed behind its Nitro paywall.

The feature was revealed earlier this month, with Discord adding that it will only be accessible to Nitro customers.

Nitro is a paid service that provides customers with extra features such as custom emojis and higher-quality screen sharing.

Discord ‘Gradient Color Themes’ exclusive to Nitro subscribers

While the gradient color themes feature is still in the testing phase and has only been made available to 5% of Discord users, the move seems to have sparked some outrage in the community (1,2,3,4,5).

bruh of course its for nitro users,of course, they never give advantages to non-nitro users because of their own greedy ass

Discord Custom Theme Colors
So this exists now. But now I kinda wonder if it’ll be a Nitro-only feature forever & if it’ll be more customisable in the future. Isn’t one of the incentives of Discord doing this less people modifying their clients? So why keep this Nitro-only then?

Users have taken to social media platforms such as Twitter and Reddit to express their frustration, with some arguing that basic customization options should be available to all users, regardless of whether they pay for Nitro or not.

Some Nitro users are also unhappy as they have not yet received access to the feature.

Discord has stated that the feature is being rolled out gradually and that all Nitro users will receive access to it eventually.

Hi there! Because our new Themes are currently in beta, not every user will have access to them. Additionally, our support team cannot manually grant access to the beta. I’m sorry for the inconvenience.

The backlash from users highlights the ongoing debate about paywalls and subscription-based services.

While companies may argue that subscription models are necessary to sustain their business, some users feel that they are being charged for basic features that should be included in the free version of the platform.

Discord has not yet responded to the criticism, but it remains to be seen whether the company will make any changes in response to user feedback.

As the popularity of Discord continues to grow, it is likely that the debate over paywalls and subscription-based services will continue to be a topic of discussion among users.

We hope that Discord addresses the issue and provides a solution that is in favor of the majority of its users. But until then, keep tabs on this story as we will post further developments here, if any.

Update 1 (March 17, 2023)

11:59 am (IST): Discord has recently introduced some new themes for Nitro subscribers and it has received a mixed reaction from users. While some like (1, 2, 3) the new themes, others (1, 2, 3) are not quite the fan.

Moreover, some users are unhappy as the themes are limited to the Nitro users.
