Just in case you’re trying to get your head around why Discord isn’t working for you, find solace in the fact that you aren’t the only one facing issues lately.
A quick look at micro-blogging site Twitter conveys there are many affected by the same issue wherein Discord is stuck on checking for updates. For a quick glance, here’s how some of the complainants word the problem:

Down detector – a popular service that gives information about live outages – also conveys that Discord is indeed going through a glitch in some regions.
User reports indicate Discord is having problems since 3:35 AM EDT. http://downdetector.com/status/discord/ RT if you’re also having problems #discorddown
Any official word on the matter? Negative, as yet. We’re yet to locate a word from the official service channels or their social media handles.

IST 13:30 pm: Reports coming in now indicate that Discord is down. Downdetector has seen a massive spike in reports from users over the past hour.

IST 03:51 pm: Earlier today many individuals seemed to have been unable to use the search feature in Discord. However, it appears that things have returned to normal as reports indicating a problem have trickled down to nil.

@discord This really annoys me, as whenever this appears, I can’t get out of it & the Search Function to search for the Texts, Links, etc. on any Server that I join and/or own automatically become unavailable. (Source)
Update (October 20)
IST 09:15 am: Many are reporting that Discord is down and they are unable to watch a podcast by the popular streamer Dream.
Update (October 22)
IST 09:15 am: It seems like the Discord developers cannot catch a break. Many are now reporting that the app is crashing for them on iOS. Discord is yet to acknowledge the issue.
IST 12:30 pm: Some users are now saying that uninstalling then reinstalling the app did fixed the crashing issues on iOS devices.
Discord said that those still experiencing the issue should restart the phone and relaunch the app to fix it.
Since you’re on iOS, please restart your phone and relaunch the app. 🙂 We fixed it earlier today!

IST 11:40 am: Following the crashing issues, Discord is asking users to uninstall the app, restart the device, and then reinstall the app again.

IST 11:12 am: A flurry of new reports on social media platforms now indicate that Discord is down or not working for a section of users.

IST 12:10 pm: A handful of reports now indicate that Discord is down or not working for users. Recent reports on Downdetector confirms that there is indeed an outage going on with Discord.
Unfortunately, the support team has not yet acknowledged these reports. And when they do, we will let you know by updating this story with latest information, so stay tuned.

04:20 pm (IST): Disboard is one of the largest Discord listing websites where you can find Discord servers by your interest.
However, fresh reports on Twitter and Reddit (1, 2) suggest that Disboard is currently down or not working for many users.
Luckily, the support team has acknowledged this outage and confirmed that they are working to resolve it.
