Demon Slayer ranks most popular anime in China (2019) according to Bilibili

A Chinese video streaming website, Bilibili, released its 2019 rankings with Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba taking the top rank as the most popular anime. The ranking was based on Bilibili’s views and reviews from the users of their platform.

Bilibili has other rankings like most viewed and most reviewed anime in which Demon Slayer naturally ranks top as well. Aside from Demon Slayer’s growing popularity in China, the anime series also gains positive reviews and an almost perfect 5-star ranking in Crunchyroll.

Demon Slayer Manga: about the author

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is the first serialized work of Koyoharu Gotoge. The manga was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump since February 15, 2016. Before this series, Gotoge worked on several one-shot mangas that were also published in the Weekly Shonen Jump.

In 2013, the then 24-year old Gotoge participated in the 70th Jump Treasure contest for new manga artists with his work, Kagarigari. Kagarigari is a 45-page one-shot with a demon-slaying theme. This would later be his basis for his most famous work, Kimetsu no Yaiba.

In 2014 and 2015, Koyoharu Gotoge published three more one-shot mangas in Weekly Shonen Jump. The first one was a 45-page manga titled Monju Shirou Kyoudai published in Jump Next 2014 volume 2. This was followed by Rokkotsu-san in the same year, and Haeniwa no Zigzag in 2015.

Demon Slayer anime

Koyoharu Gotoge’s Kimetsu no Yaiba was adapted into anime by Ufotable, a Japanese animation studio founded in October 2000. A 26-episode series was announced on June 4, 2018, and the first episode premiered on April 6, 2019. The series is licensed by Aniplex of America in North America and streams on Crunchyroll, Hulu, and Funimation.

In July 2019 Aniplex announced the production of the English dub of the series. The English dubbed series has then premiered on October 12, 2019, on Toonami in the United States. The last episode of Demon Slayer aired on September 29, 2019.

Demon Slayer movie announced

Ever since its anime premier, the Demon Slayer manga has significantly increased in sales, competing with giants like One Piece. Last November 2019, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba ranked number two in sales according to Shueisha’s 2019 sales ranking. This created no small stir among One Piece and Demon slayer fans who argue which manga is still better.

Some fans argue that the increase in sales was catalyzed by the anime adaptation of the manga. The animation of the Demon slayer continued to receive positive feedback. By the end of season one, fans were left craving for more.

However, Demon Slayer will not have a season two animated series. Instead, the official Twitter account for Demon Slayer announced a feature-length movie of the second season. The exact premiere date of the movie was not announced yet but it is set to be released this year.
