Dark and Darker arrived as an interesting game that seeks to recover the classic ‘Dungeon crawler’ genre in medieval fantasy worlds full of dangers.

As in other classic games of the genre, Dark and Darker require collaboration in teams made up of various character classes (each with their own strengths and weaknesses) to survive.

However, a recent Dark and Darker update brought a notable damage nerf to the Wizard class, and the decision is being heavily criticized.

Dark and Darker latest ‘Wizard damage nerf’ seems too much

As its name suggests, the Wizards main strength are their spells. But, the latest update of the game nerfed the damage dealt by virtually every spell in the Wizard class arsenal.

The Dark and Darker update patch notes show which Wizard abilities now deal less damage:

-Wizard Light’s Spell Count 8 -> 6
-Wizard Ignite’s Spell Count 6 -> 5
-Wizard Zap’s Spell Count 6 -> 5
-Wizard Ice Bolt’s Spell Count 6 -> 5
-Wizard Haste’s Spell Count 5 -> 4
-Wizard Invisibility’s Spell Count 5 -> 4
-Wizard Chain Lightning’s Spell Count 4 -> 3
-Wizard Fireball Splash Damage 20 -> 10

Of course, the reactions to this decision did not wait. After all, much of the community is ‘main Wizard’.

Multiple Dark and Darker players are complaining (even ironically, as in the screenshot below) about the new Wizard damage nerf. Apparently, it is exaggerated that practically all spells are now weaker.

wizard nerfs are… odd?

So wizard got nerfed, fireball, chain lightning, invis, and haste all deserved it IMO because wizard has plenty of spells that are clearly very good.

But wizard also has many spells that clearly are not. Zap and ice bolt do less damage than a grey recurve bow shot. You would have to cast each of them 6 times to deal as much damage as 1 magic missile.

what do I do as a wizard?

I’m having a hard time understanding this class. It feels like I do no spell damage to undead where I’m blowing all my cast charges to kill two and it doesn’t feel like I have any great melee options. What should I be slotting for either solo or group play and what weapon should I be using for undead.

As a result of the nerf, main Wizard players are now much more vulnerable than before. It’s worth pointing out that Wizards don’t have much physical strength either, as the spells are normally their primary weapon.

There is still no official word on these complaints from the Dark and Darker developer team. We will update this story as events unfold in the future.
