Original story (published on April 30) follows:

Champions of pure Android have always argued that having less bloatware means faster/timely software updates, but Asus is proving otherwise with the continued delaying of the ZenFone Max Pro M1 Android 10 update.

The device should be running the stable Android 10 at the time of this writing, but the best you can get is the beta version. Released in late January 2020, it has now been three months of testing.

Given Asus touts the ZenFone Max Pro M1 software as pure Android, it’s hard to explain what is really delaying the development and rollout of the software. Ideally, having few modifications to make to AOSP should directly translate to swift releases, but that isn’t the case here.

Soon after the first ZenFone Max Pro M1 Android 10 beta build was released, Asus also released another build for those interested in rolling back to Pie in the event of an unwanted experience on the new OS.

Asus has also hinted at potential delays in rolling out the OS on several occasions. When the Pie-based April security patch arrived, it also signalled a longer wait for the OS to arrive, but it was the recent confirmation that Asus is struggling with fixing bugs that nailed it.

This came after the company cited poor test results from the beta version as the reason for the postponed rollout to April-end, but things have now taken another twist. Apparently, the update’s release date is now pushed to mid-May, but it’s unclear whether this is the stable or another beta.

We unfortunately announce that Max Pro M1 (ZB601KL) Android 10 upgrade download from website is postponed to the middle of May, 2020 due to test results are under checking to meet our expectation.

Asus personnel had pointed out that the company has postponed its internal update as it addresses existing bugs, so it could as well mean the mid-May release isn’t the stable version. The good thing is we still have two weeks between now and then to get more clarity around this matter.
