New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on June 9, 2021) follows:

Asus is one of the more underrated Android OEMs. The ROG Phone devices have pretty much made a name for themselves in the gaming community and the Zenfone devices offer so much for their price.

Of course, one of the long-standing issues has been Asus’ update policy and with the ROG Phone 5 and the Zenfone 8 devices, it remains to be seen whether the company will turn things around.

For regular updates, and even bug-fix updates, Asus is doing pretty well. Recently, we have seen the Zenfone 7 and the Zenfone 8 family of devices getting updated to the May 2021 patch.

These updates brought with them a bunch of new enhancements and improvements but what really stood out from the changelog was all the ‘enabled VoLTE’ entries.

enabled volte

This is clearly something that Asus users have been asking for from the OEM for a while and with this, users on the mentioned carriers have something to get excited over.

However, the situation is a little less than ideal for the countless users in other regions who are dying to get this HD call feature enabled.

I am still waiting for situation to clarify with all that glitches. But how long? Samsung – VoLTE for most EU carriers on launch. Sony – same. Here we have beta quality product on launch. Are we testers or consumers?!?

A quick scroll through the community forum reveals a bunch of frustrated users who still can’t access VoLTE on their Asus Zenfone 8 and Zenfone 8 Flip devices on various carriers.

These users have since brought forth complaints to Asus and in response to one of these complaints, a forum admin goes to notify users that the company is working towards this.

validated and added volte

Over the past 3 weeks we’ve validated and added VoLTE on top of what was already enabled; Germany Telekom, Spain Vodafone, Czech Republic O2, and Russia Tele2. And working on many more to enable as we’re waiting for validation.

The forum moderator says that the company is working with other carriers to try and get this feature enabled on the Zenfone 8 and Zenfone 8 Flip devices.

This is fine and all but, these affected users want to know when exactly this feature is going to be enabled on their units. So what timelines are we looking at? In response to another complaint, Asus says:

can't tell when or if volte zenfone 8

I’m sorry to hear that. We’re discussing VoLTE support with a lot of operators and Orange PL is one of them. I can’t tell you if or when VoLTE will be supported but I want you to know that the process is ongoing.

With this, we don’t have any guarantees that this feature will come to all Zenfone 8 or Zenfone 8 Flip users. Additionally, the company is shying away from giving any timelines.

Obviously, this is not going to sit well with these users, many of whose frustration is palpable, owing in part to the frustrating customer support and the dire need to have VoLTE enabled.

We shall continue to keep an eye on this and update as and when more Zenfone 8 and 8 Flip users get this HD Voice feature enabled on their respective carriers so stay tuned.

To recall, Asus has been pretty awful when it comes to VoLTE support. It is encouraging to see the company taking decent strides towards changing this.
