Asus in talks with AT&T to enable ZenFone 6 VoLTE support, says ZenTalk forum mod

Asus previously had said that they had no plans to bring VoLTE support to its flagship device — the Asus Zenfone 6 — which is a ridiculous move considering the fact that VoLTE is an essential means of telecommunication in 2020.

As a result, the company drew flak from various users and has been under pressure ever since.

It appears that Asus has finally complied with the requests. This is evident from a comment left by a mod in response to a user query on the official Asus forums about VoLTE support on AT&T.

So what exactly is VoLTE? Well, VoLTE stands for “voice over LTE”. This means that voice calls make use of the 4G/LTE network, rather than dated 2G or 3G connections which are usually used.

The main advantage that comes with this technology is much better call quality when compared to calls over traditional 2G/3G networks. The technology basically bridges the gap in audio quality between internet calling apps and calls made over GSM.

Now let’s come back to the Zenfone 6. Although Asus had clarified that they had no plans to bring VoLTE support for the device in the US, they, quite surprisingly, proved themselves wrong by releasing an update in October that enabled VoLTE on T-Mobile.

And as already shown in the screenshot above, Asus is similarly going to add VoLTE support for the Zenfone 6 on AT&T as well.

Or is at least trying to. Like the mod has said, the company is only in ‘talks’ with AT&T at this stage. It is unclear if the talks will actually yield a positive result at the end.

But if Asus has already added support for T-Mobile, then how hard can it be enabling VoLTE on AT&T as well? The ROG Phone 2 has received similar treatment. For now, users can only wait.

It is worth mentioning though that Asus doesn’t exactly have a clean track record when it comes to software updates. The poor Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 is yet to receive Android 10 after almost a year since development commenced.

Hopefully, the OEM won’t treat their flagship Zenfone 6 in a similar manner and enable VoLTE on AT&T as soon as possible, fingers crossed.
