Apple has been releasing iOS 14.5 and tvOS 14.5 updates to all its devices before making the transition to the next big iteration iOS 15.

Even though the update aimed to bring more stability and optimizations, it only brought a set of bugs along. Apple TV has been facing serious complications after the tvOS update like we recently saw.

The update has affected device owners in more than one way. And looks like it is going to be a big list of issues while devices are on tvOS 14.5.

Apart from the crackling sound in movies, the resolution and HDMI pass through on AV receivers are the next thing to be compromised for Apple TV users after the tvOS 14.5 update.

It was a smooth sail when on tvOS 14.4 or previous versions but as soon as folks made the shift to tvOS 14.5, the Apple TV no longer switches between the resolution, and the connection on AV receivers has become unstable.

ince it updated a few days ago the hdmi connection has been constantly re-negotiating, connecting, disconnecting, just been completely unreliable an unstable. I’ve switched ports and cables on the receiver, reset video settings, rechecked hdmi, nothing keeps it connected for more than a few minutes. The TV behaves as if it’s switching to HDR content over and over. (Source)

Apple TV owners regret updating the software as the resolution once changed can’t go back to the previous state and throws an error on the screen.

Some users did try to reach out to customer support but all they said was this issue is linked to software and they’ll be informed when a solution is available.

Also, there’s no way to go back to the previous software versions once you’re on tvOS 14.5 so the only way to resolve is to get a fix ready.

Apple really needs to take note of it as both pass through on AV and inability to switch between resolutions are a matter of concern for a big chunk of users.

While Apple officials acknowledge and begin to work on the fix, here is a workaround suggested by a user that can be tried.

I ended up having to turn off color enhancements and set the 4K signal format to standard on my Onkyo Receiver. After those changes on the receiver I’m able to set Apple TV resolution to 60hz 4K Std. I cannot get HDR settings to work on Apple TV using signal match or setting to 4K HDR manually. (Source)

If nothing seems to work, there’s always the last resort of completely resetting the device.

We really hope Apple begins working on this issue and address it in the coming updates. That said, we will keep tracking this issue and update here as and when a workaround or a solution is available.
