New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on Sep 16, 2022) follows:

Apple Books, formerly known as iBooks, is an e-book reading and store application created by Apple Inc. for its iOS and macOS operating systems and devices.

Users can buy books from the Apple Books store or transfer their own EPUB and PDF files via Dropbox, iTunes, or email and then open them within the app.

With iOS 16, Apple Books received its most significant update in years, including a new mini audiobook player, three new page themes, and much more.

Apple Books new page turn animation

However, after the update, several Apple Books users expressed their displeasure with the new ‘page turn animation’ on Twitter and other social media platforms (1,2,3,4,5,6,7).

The older animation used to mimic turning pages in an ebook as if you were reading a real book. As a result, readers felt as if they were reading from a real book.

The new animations, however, have pages that turn more like a PDF file, eliminating the authentic sensation of turning a physical book page that Apple Book users used to get.

Some claim that they would have liked an option that would have let them choose the preferred page-turn animation rather than being forced to use the new animation.

@Apple why did you have to mess with the Apple Books app? That new page-turn animation is truly disappointing. The original skeuomorphic version was way better than the replaced card-like slide version. Why?! #iOS16

That Books app though. Someone at Apple needs a talking-to. To remove the page-turning animation, the one fun shining star of the app, what were they thinking? And yes I submitted to Feedback. But will Apple flip the switch back on?

Another drawback of the new page-turning animation is that it temporarily brightens the page when it is turned when users have the app’s dark theme enabled.

For readers who are deeply immersed in a book, this is highly distracting since the abrupt change in brightness that occurs while turning the page hurts their eyes at night.

Many Apple Book users want the return of the original skeuomorphic page turn animation. So we hope Apple will pay attention to customer feedback and implement the required changes in the upcoming release of iOS 16.

Update 1 (March 2, 2023)

09:40 am (IST): The iOS 16.4 beta 2 update brings back the original page-turn curl animation to Apple Books. Earlier, turning a page would either slide it to one side of the screen or just vanish and get replaced with the next page.

Beta testers can change this setting from the Themes and Settings section of the Books app.
