For past couple of days, Android Auto users while operating Google Maps have been encountering crashes (1,2) on accessing ‘Labeled Places’ in the maps menu. The screen of the car’s head unit reportedly turns blank, following which Google Maps restart.
What’s good is Android Auto team has quickly fixed the crash bug with an update. Someone from Android Auto team broke the news on the relevant thread discussing the matter on the company’s official help forum saying:
A fix is in place with a new Android Auto update. The update should be available in the Play Store now.
The app’s Play Store listing also affirms that an update was pushed out recently.
As far as the problem is concerned, here’s how some of the complainants explained the issue:
With Android Auto connected to either the car head unit or desktop-head-unit using the debug head unit server on device, Google Maps will crash when clicking on the ‘Labelled places’ menu option. Labelled places appear appear correctly in the search results of Google Maps (via the head unit), so are accessible by Google Maps.
On Google maps when selecting menu > Labeled Places, AA instantly crashes. I get a full black screen, and it restarts maps from scratch. I have a half dozen labeled places, this is very frustrating
It’s worth mentioning that some users also faced crashes while accessing other options like Favourite Places, Saved Places, and Share trip progress in Google Maps menu.
But that’s not the case anymore, as the matter has now been resolved with Android Auto’s latest update. In case you were observing Google Maps crashes (while accessing the option mentioned in this article), install the latest update, for it offers the pill you are looking for.
