Airplane mode/4G battery drain comes to haunt Galaxy S7 users as well

Back in April, we brought to notice the Android Oreo triggered battery drainage issues on Galaxy S8/S9 and Note8 devices (when in standalone or airplane mode). Soon after, Samsung came up with an update (only for S8 users) to fix up the glitch, but it reportedly did not cure the problem completely.

And now, joining the group of complainants, Galaxy S7/S7 Edge users are reporting similar battery drains after installing the Oreo update. The problem reportedly shows up when the device is in cell standby mode, specifically with LTE/4G enabled. Some of those affected say:

I have a 30% battery drain just due to Cell standby which is ridiculous. I never had this during Nougat. Battery seems to be affected a lot with Oreo compared to Nougat on the S7 Edge.

It isn´t only S7 Edge, I have the S7 Flat and it´s the same problem. The only constant is the Oreo update, it seems that the mobile signal is not managed correctly in terms of energy with the new update. Another curious fact about this issue, is that the detailed info of “cell standby” drain says “0 minutes” of activation, but the energy consumed is shown. On idle, the mAh consumed by this increases without control

Following the rising number of complaints from Galaxy S7 users, came a statement from one of the Samsung moderators on the company’s European help forum, and here’s what they said:

I’ve raised this issue to our software team; and me or one of the other mods will keep you updated on any advice they give.

On another thread, where Galaxy S8 users have been discussing the same battery drain problem, the same moderator added:

Noticed something similar happening on S7s recently; and I’ve raised an escalation on it – along with what you S8 guys have reported – to our software team.

While it’s appeasing that the matter has been brought to the company’s notice, there’s no information as to how long will they take to diagnose and fix whatever’s causing airplane/4G mode battery drains on the Galaxy S7, S8, S9 and Note8 devices. We hope they do it soon. Rest assured, we’ll update as and when any further news-worthy development takes place.
