Slice of life manga Maiko-san Chi no Makanai-san or The Caterer at the Maiko Manor will now have its own anime adaptation for the TV audience, and readers are absolutely thrilled about it. The announcement was made by the official Twitter handle of the NHK television.
To mark the announcement, the network has also shared the first animated visuals from the series. Animated Maiko-san looks warm and the animation style suits the story’s languid pace.
Baka-Updates database described the manga series as the stories from the daily life of Maiko-San. According to its synopsis, the story is set in the winding streets of Kyoto’s geisha district.
It follows the life of a 16-year-old girl named Kiyo who lives there. After failing to become a Maiko, an apprentice traditional Japanese performer, Kiyo works as the caterer for her troupe.
“Maiko-san Chi no Makanai-san” is an award-winning manga series authored and illustrated by Aiko Koyama. The series has been getting published in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shōnen Sunday magazine since December 2016.
Koyama sensei’s other works include The First Train, Chirori and more. He had once worked as an assistant for mangakas Raiku Makoto and Saijou Shinji.
The series won the prestigious 65th Shougakukan Award in January 2019 for the Shounen Manga category. Not just critical acclaim, but the series enjoys a consistent readership and is one of the more popular serializations in Weekly Shonen Sunday edition.
With its simple yet realistic subject matter, it has targetted both young adult and mature audiences with quite a few of them raving good reviews about the manga in the west. While it has been licensed by Elex Media Komputindo in Indonesia, its western readers still have to make do with fan-translations.
That is why the announcement from NHK of an anime adaptation is welcome news among the manga’s readers in the west, as it increases its chance of being picked up by an English licensing agency in the USA and Europe.
