New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on May 17, 2021) follows:

Password managing has been a concern for a lot of users especially when you have tons of accounts online.

We end up making more accounts than we realize and since it is recommended to have different passwords for every other platform, it becomes a task to store all the passwords.

1Password is among the top picks that not only manage the passwords but also help create stronger passwords.

But looks like this is about to trouble users as the Safari and Chrome browser extension of 1Password has stopped working on macOS.

There are plenty of reports that confirm the extension no longer works when clicked upon. The fields get no recommendations either.

Safari on the latest macOS keeps asking me to install the 1Password extension. Only reboot helps. It’s quite annoying cause I have to manually copy and paste passwords from the 1Password app whenever I want to log in somewhere.

since macOS 11.3 the safari extension no longer works? is this a known issue?

This, as reported, was working fine until the macOS Big Sur 11.3 update aired for users. It takes both Chrome and Safari browsers under its radar.

When they stumbled upon this issue, users tried to run some basic troubleshooting steps like restarting the browser, removing/adding the extension but nothing seems to work for them with 1Password.

I’ve tried restarting the browser and quitting 1Password, and neither really work. I’ve also tried removing the browser add-on or disabling it and reinstalling it or enabling it, no dice. The only thing that seems to work is rebooting.

Looking at the high volumes of complaints flowing in, 1Password support has suggested a workaround that may help get rid of this issue on both Safari and Chrome.

For Safari browser

Sorry about that. This happens because the security checks we perform can fail – quitting the browser (Command-Q), quitting 1Password completely (Control-Option-Command-Q) and then opening both again should fix it.

For Chrome browser

We’re really sorry for the trouble. We have these steps:
1. Open the main 1Password window.
2. Press Ctrl-Opt-Cmd-Q to quit.
3. Quit any browsers.
4. Re-open both & retry. (Source)

Even if it resolves the issue temporarily, a permanent resolution is what everybody seeks for something they have paid for.

The support assures that the teams from Apple and 1Password are working together to get this working.

There’s one more workaround till the devs look into this and that is by installing the extension directly from the website instead of the Mac App Store version.

If you install the website version rather than the Mac App Store version it resolves most of these issues. (Source)

Not only macOS users but a similar issue has troubled iPhone users after the iOS 14.5 update that affects the iPassword app.

Well, good thing is that this already lies with the developers and a fix is likely to be already in the works.

Update 1 (May 17, 2021)

IST 05:13 pm 1Password has just now released a new update with version 7.8.3.Beta-0, which should address the ongoing issue.
