Discord is adding a new feature called ‘Pronouns’ that lets you add your preferred pronouns to your profile/bio. It seems that it is still under beta testing and will roll out eventually.

This option will allow users to add pronouns to both their ‘User Profile’ and ‘Server Profile’. However, it appears that user will have to pay in order to use this feature as only Nitro users can select per-server pronouns.

You can check out the screenshots attached below to see the distinction. Tap or click to enlarge the images.

The fact that the feature has a Nitro badge against the Pronouns option in the ‘Server profile’, makes it clear that the per-server feature is indeed behind a paywall.

Discord per-server ‘Pronouns’ being locked behind Nitro draws critcisim

That’s precisely why users are criticizing the ‘Pronouns’ feature. They believe that such a basic option shouldn’t be hidden behind a paywall and be made open to everyone (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8).

Pretty lame that the per-server pronouns are locked behind Nitro. Not everyone can safely put them on their profile

Dude are you serious on having per-server pronoun labelling behind a damn paywall? Between the client sided customisation features and now this, it’s just ridiculous.

Some also feel that the per-server pronouns being locked behind Nitro is quite absurd as it becomes quite demeaning, given that the main motivation for using them was certainly to avoid being publically outed.

@discord what the fuck are you doing making pronouns a paid feature by giving people the option of outing themselves in their global profile or paying for server profiles

Even though the feature is still in its beta phases, users have already begun voicing their concerns. They are now hoping for a stable version that will be available to everyone (1,2,3,4).

Surprisingly, it’s not the first time Discord did something like this. We witnessed a similar display of criticism from users when the ‘Gradient Color Themes’ was locked behind Nitro.

Discord has not yet replied to the criticism regarding the paywalled per-server Pronouns, so it is unclear if the company will alter its strategy in light of user feedback.

We expect the team to address the problem and offer a workable solution that benefits the majority of its users. But until then, keep an eye on this article because we’ll update it if anything new happens.
