Google Chrome, the most used web browser in the world, receives tweaks and new features from time to time. However, not all changes are well received by the community.

One of the most criticized changes was the ‘hover cards previews’, which were released as an ‘experimental feature’ in Chrome v73.

However, Google Chrome v111 brought back the hover cards previews, this time not as an experimental feature, but here you will learn how you can disable them.

Google Chrome v111 brought back hover cards previews

Google Chrome ‘hover cards previews’ feature generates a pop-up when you hover over a tab. This pop-up offers extended information about the website opened in the tab (mainly website title and domain).

A hover card preview normally looks like this:

But multiple users did not like the feature. Apparently, the constant pop-up when sliding the mouse over the tabs is annoying for them.

Now, the hover cards previews are back in the latest browser update. Similar to the initial release, several users want to know how to disable Google Chrome hover cards.

Hover tab previews are back and can’t be disabled? WTF?? Regretably I just clicked the “Update” button on Chrome and now the hover tab preview are back and this time there’s no apparent way to disable them. Has anyone found a fix? So sick of Google enforcing settings some may not want.

How can you disable tab hover images in v111? I just updated chrome to v111 on ubuntu and those annoying tab images are back but now there is no option to remove them (in chrome flags). Is there an extension that can remove them? Or some other way?

The problem is that now the feature is not experimental, so the method to disable it is different. In the past, you could find the option in the ‘experimental features menu’.

But now, the option is not present in the experimental features menu:

This is how you can disable hover cards previews

You shouldn’t worry anyway, as there is still a way to disable the feature. The process is simple and involves using the classic Google Chrome ‘flags’:

Enable chrome://flags/#temporary-unexpire-flags-m110 and relaunch Chrome to disable chrome://flags/#tab-hover-card-images

And that’s it, you should already have Chrome hover cards disabled. Feel free to leave your comment below if this workaround was useful for you.
