Developed by Savage Interactive, Procreate is a raster graphics editor app for digital painting which is available for iOS and iPadOS.
Though it is considered one of the best apps for digital illustration, it is not immune to glitches and issues that sometimes trouble users.
Procreate users unable to import WEBP images after v5.3 update
According to reports, some users are currently unable to insert or import WEBP images after its recent v5.3 update.
cannot emphasize enough how much the 5.3 update to procreate has thrown a wrench into my workflow. image imports being broken in every way except drag and drop. brush cursor bug (and even working cursor is too thick). strokes skipping/jumping/undoing mid stroke. and more

I can’t import photos saved from browsers anymore

WEBP is an image format that a lot of digital artists or creators use because of its efficient compression and low file size. However, some are now unable to use it.
Affected users are infuriated and frustrated as the issue is hindering them from working on and delivering projects.
It should also be noted that some are facing other problems besides the importing issue after the v5.3 update. Reports suggest that the app is repeatedly breaking and crashing for them.
Official acknowledgment
Fortunately, the Procreate team has acknowledged the problem where users are unable to import or insert WEBP images and is already working to fix it.
Potential workaround
As a potential solution to this, the Procreate team has also advised those affected to try using the ‘Drag and Drop’ method for importing WEBP images.
This is currently under investigation and seems to only affect certain photo types. Try using Drag and Drop for your imports as a workaround. This should allow you to import for now

The method involves dragging the desired image from its location on an iPad or iPhone, and then dropping it into the Procreate canvas or library.
The Procreate v5.3 update might have brought many new features and improvements to the app, but it is unfortunate that some users are experiencing issues with the WEBP image import.
Hopefully, the Procreate team will be able to resolve the issue so that users can get back to experiencing all features of the app.
Keep tabs and stay tuned as we will update this space with further developments once they emerge.
