We’re at a point where just about every appliance in our homes is connected to the internet. Of course, this is good in some ways and can be disastrous in others. How so? Well, here’s one fine example.
Many Anova Precision Oven (APO) owners noticed that their ovens went in a boot loop all of a sudden and started beeping as well as resetting every 30 seconds.
Some were even woken up in the middle of the night to the sound of their ovens beeping. Naturally, this left many confused at first. Here are some reports for reference:
Same. Started now middle of night. What a pain. (Source)
Same here. Keeps resetting and displaying 150F. Won’t heat, won’t reset after unplug and re-plug. Looks like it might be bricked. (Source)
Ugh, my oven is boot looping every 25 seconds. Imagine the cumulative screams across the world as dinner is ruined. (Source)
Upon further inspection, users noticed that a forced OTA update for the Anova Precision Oven was to blame for the boot loop issue. More precisely, the version 1.1.31 firmware update.
Some individuals even took to YouTube to share videos of their ovens stuck in a boot loop. Here’s one such example:
As you can see, the oven keeps resetting every few seconds and beeping when plugged into the power source.
The incident was brought to our attention via a tweet by Artem Russakovskii on Twitter. That said, Anova Precision Oven (APO) users can find some solace in the fact that the company has acknowledged the boot loop issue.
Hey all. We’re aware of the issue and investigating the problem. Right now we recommend unplugging the oven, and we will update as soon as we can. Right now, drop a note to [email protected] and we can make sure to contact you there with the fix as well. (Source)
As a temporary measure, the company recommends that users should unplug the oven from the power source until further notice.
Factory resetting the oven will provide temporary relief, however, there are chances that it will automatically download the firmware update once again and come back to square one.
Nevertheless, we’ll keep tabs on the situation and will post an update if and when there are any further developments on the matter.
