New updates are being added to the bottom of the story…
Original story (from July 16) follows:
Social media has got to be one of the biggest inventions in the digital age and today, social media platforms are the in-thing. We use these platforms to stay in touch with family and friends, to stay abreast with current happenings, for business, and everything in between.
Reddit prides itself in being the ‘front page of the internet’ and in the past few years, we’ve seen the social platform gaining a lot of users, users who aren’t exactly fans of mainstream social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter.
However, Reddit, like many other online platforms, isn’t immune to the occasional outages and glitches we have come to associate with platforms with a global reach.
Now, a section of Reddit users is reportedly facing an issue on the platform. According to affected users, clicking on a video in the Reddit app on iOS plays a random incorrect video from somewhere else on the platform.
I’m on Reddit iOS mobile, from my feed when I click on the post of any video from any sub it brings up an incorrect video from a random sub, nothing specific, just some other video. I have to click on a post with a picture and then swipe my way over. Unable to look at comments at all. Glad to know it’s not an isolated incident for myself.

Yeah this keeps happening to me too. Went to fightpin to watch some idiots fight in concrete but every time I click on NSFW posts it opens up something completely different. I mean I got to watch a dude sleep with cheetahs cause of it but that ain’t what I signed up for.

This issue seems to be pretty widespread, at least according to the number of reports on Reddit (1,2) and the kind of upvotes these posts are getting.
Luckily, this issue seems to have reached Reddit and we have since seen the issue getting acknowledgment from Reddit help, noting that the issue has been sent to engineers for further investigation.
Thanks for the link – totally ruined my morning. I’ve bumped this issue over to the engineers for further investigation. Any screen recordings of this occurring would be greatly appreciated!

In the meantime, users are advised to keep sending their recordings of this issue as that will help engineers narrow down this issue.
Also, there might be a way for affected users on iOS to work around this issue. According to some users, switching the Reddit app on iOS to card or classic mode seems to fix this issue of the platform playing an incorrect video.
I changed mine to card or classic mode and it shows correct video.

The efficacy of this workaround remains to be seen though as we still don’t have enough reports from affected users testifying to the effectiveness of this workaround.
That said, we shall continue to keep an eye on this Reddit on iOS playing incorrect video issue and update as and when we get more info so stay tuned to PiunikaWeb to be first to know once the issue is solved.
Update 1 (July 17, 2021)
IST 11:30AM: We stumbled upon a user who shared a video proof of the issue. As you can see in the video below, clicking on the video thumbnail opens a random video everytime.
Update 2 (July 18, 2021)
IST 15:30 – Going by the information shared by a Redditor, the correct video can be accessed in the following way:
If you tap the platform the video came from (redgifs, imgur, etc) rather than the post itself then it takes you to the correct video. And, if it’s a redgif link, click on the profile that posted it to redgif and it will take you to more of their content if they have it.

Update 3 (July 19, 2021)
IST 10:50 – Incoming is another workaround that may help. As playing a video from the home page of Reddit throws incorrect or random results, then you may watch the actual video by accessing the channel page and finding the video there directly.
All you have to do is, head to the Reddit home page> Tap on the channel of interest, and open the channel page> Scroll down to find the video. It should now load normally.
Update 4 (July 20, 2021)
IST 12:15 – A Reddit Admin commented on the matter a few days ago, sharing that the fix for this issue will arrive in the next update of the Reddit app. Here’s exactly what they said:
Thanks for reporting! A fix for this issue is currently being worked on and will be implemented in the next available app release. Keep an eye on r/changelog for incoming updates!
Update 5 (July 21, 2021)
IST 11:55 am – Going by user reports something is not right with the comments section too as some say that clicking on a comment takes them to random videos, while others say they can’t go to the comment’s full screen on a post with an embedded video.
Update 6 (July 22, 2021)
An individual claimed that disabling the ‘Blur NSFW image’ option will fix the issue.
iOS go to settings – Reddit – uncheck “blur nsfw images “.
