Poco M2 Android 11 update looks near as kernel sources for the device, Xiaomi Redmi Note 9, & Redmi 9 go live

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 9, Redmi 9 Prime, Redmi 9, and the Poco M2 have plenty in common. While the Redmi Note 9 does have a completely different look from the rest, all of the devices still come with pretty similar spec sheets.

For starters, the phones are all powered by the Mediatek Helio G80 chip. As if that isn’t enough, each of them also has a 13MP camera sensor, with the exception of the Redmi Note 9 that sports a 48MP one.

There is one difference, however, that puts the Poco M2 at a loss when pitched against the rest of the aforementioned phones.

As it stands, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9, Redmi 9 Prime, and Redmi 9 have all been recently treated to Android 11. Heck, the Redmi Note 9 even bagged MIUI 12.5 yesterday.

It is unclear what’s behind the hold-up at the moment. After all, Poco variants for Xiaomi devices typically bag the same update within a month.

However, the Poco M2’s Xiaomi counterparts – the Redmi 9 and Redmi 9 Prime – received Android 11 back in March. It’s July now and there’s still no sign of the update for the Poco M2, which is quite odd.

But a new development now shines a ray of hope on Poco M2 users anxiously awaiting Android 11.

Recently, Xiaomi released the Android 11 kernel source code for the Redmi Note 9, Redmi 10X 4G, Redmi 9, Redmi 9 Prime, and Poco M2 collectively.

So what exactly is a kernel source? Well, Android is built on top of the Linux kernel. Thus, companies are required to provide the source code of any kernel binaries they distribute with devices, upon request.

These sources are then utilized by custom ROM developers.
