1Password first came out when monthly subscription or membership was not that common in the software domain. Hence, the popular password manager service was initially launched only for macOS X 10.4 and required individual software licenses.
While 1Password gradually made it to other platforms, it still required licenses on an individual basis. Basically, the password manager service required license per platform and user.
This further made software upgrades quite challenging due to their paid nature. So, 1Password 7 was launched in 2018 where users were given a choice between a standalone license for the service or a monthly subscription on 1Password.com.
Naturally, more and more users got inclined towards a monthly subscription or membership for 1Password as it provided additional benefits.
Now, the password manager service is completely doing away with individual licenses in favor of memberships.
It is only natural for such transitions to occur as monthly subscriptions have now become the new norm.
Thus users can switch to a membership by signing up on 1Password.com, 1Password.eu, or 1Password.ca and add their account to 1Password.
However, there are still those who like to pay for a service only once and forget about it. For such users, 1Password is providing a trade-in discount where users can exchange their existing licenses to get 50% off for first 3 years.
On the other hand, those who do not even want to pay half the fee on a monthly basis can purchase a $99 gift card.
In return, users will get $150 worth of credit which would allow them to use the password manager service for over 3 years without worrying about the monthly charges.
All in all, this is a win-win situation for existing license holders now that the service provider has ended support for the same.
So, those who wish to avail the said 50% off discount or $150 of credit just have to drop an email to [email protected] with their license.
However, it must be noted that the $150 of credit can only be used on 1Password.com. It is still good to see that the password manager service is steadily evolving to meet the needs of current times as well as users.
