Asus ROG Phone 5 AOD brightness issue persists, further improvement under evaluation

Always-on Display, aptly abbreviated as AOD, has been one of the headlining features for flagship devices over the past few years.

This has been made possible by the advances in display tech and today, you’d be hard-pressed to find a top-tier flagship device that doesn’t support this feature in some shape or form.

By now, you’ve probably heard of the Asus ROG Phone 5, the company’s latest addition to the popular, ever-growing list of dedicated gaming devices under its ROG Phone line of devices.

This beastly device packs all the bells and whistles necessary to make a gamer tick, and a body paint-job to match the aesthetic.

Software-wise, the device came with Android 11 out of the box and we can only hope to see the company do better in updating this beast to upcoming versions of Android, unlike its predecessors.

For the capable, complete package that the ROG Phone 5 is, it is not immune to little bugs and issues. One of these issues has been the Always-on Display feature’s brightness.

I would definitely want to be able to adjust brightness of AOD/notifications when screen is off to be actually visible and useable or to use same brightness as I use on phone regularly. Right now it and notifications are essentially useless and I have to open up the screen always.

Always-on Panel in general indoor normal lighting environment, brightness will become very dark, and sometimes brightness is normal. Can you fix the brightness or change the brightness correctly with the ambient light source when it is sometimes not clear when the time is visible? The system has been updated to the latest version.

According to users, the ROG Phone 5’s always-on display is dim and this renders the feature useless when in brightly lit areas.

To recall, this issue is supposed to have been fixed already. Back in May, we saw Asus pushing out an update to the ROG Phone 5, an update with build number 18.0840.2103.26.

That update brought with it the March security patch and a bunch of bug fixes, one of them being that to the Always-on Display’s low brightness issue.

Clearly, that fix didn’t work as well, that is if the above-mentioned recent complaints from users running the latest update are anything to go by.

Now, Asus is looking to take another swing at fixing this. Speaking in response to one of the user complaints, a forum admin from Asus says that this has been forwarded to back-end staff for evaluation.

In response to the characteristics of the panel, in order to slow down the occurrence of burn- in, we will try our best to display the function of Always-on in different positions under different brightness… Transfer to the back-end staff for evaluation, thank you.
