Razer Phone 2 finally bags an OS upgrade to Android 11, albeit with a catch

The smartphone market is a rather brutal one. One that has claimed so many names, some bigger than others, some unexpected, all gone, never to be part of the smartphone market.

HTC, Essential, LG, these are just some of the names we have had to bid farewell to. Some try to make a comeback like Nokia did, all to various levels of success.

One such underdog that seeks to rise from the ashes that was Nextbit is Razer. In 2018, we saw the company releasing the Razer Phone 2. the phone came with Android 8.1 out of the box but only got updated to Android 9 Pie with reports of Android 10 remaining just that, reports.

Like many other smaller companies, Razer straight-up sucks when it comes to updating its devices to new versions of Android. This, probably due to lack of resources to continue supporting these devices.

While owners of the Razer Phone 2 continue to mull over their life choices, waiting for Razer to push out an update to Android 10, a knight in shining armor is seemingly coming to their rescue.

Users of the Razer Phone 2 might have something interesting to look forward to as LineageOS, one of the world’s most revered custom ROMs now supports the Razer Phone 2 for the latest Android 11-based LineageOS 18.1.

The release statement notes that this is an official support which means that the device will get regular updates from LineageOS. These builds should be available in a few days.

It may take up to one week for the builds & Lineage recovery to become available if all goes well with the Lineage automated builder.

So yes, Razer Phone 2 users now have an official build of Android 11. The only catch is that this is a custom ROM. But really at this point, aren’t you already frustrated with Razer? Is your warranty still valid? What do you have to lose?

Razer really needs to step up its software game as in 2021, great hardware isn’t enough anymore.
