Xiaomi’s MIUI 12.5 started rolling out to eligible devices from late March in China. While the initial releases were limited to flagship devices, the update began trickling down to budget devices as well.

The latest iteration of Xiaomi’s custom Android skin brings about several changes including performance improvements, enhanced privacy features, an updated Notes app, new animations, and a few UI tweaks.

However, calling MIUI 12.5 a ‘major’ update won’t be doing it justice considering the fact that the list of changes introduced with it aren’t exactly the game-changing kind.

Moreover, the list of new features is reduced considerably on the global version of MIUI 12.5 when compared to the Chinese one.

In fact, the regular user won’t really be able to spot the differences between MIUI 12 and MIUI 12.5 unless they exactly know where to look.

But this is quite expected considering that MIUI 12.5 was only meant to be an iterative update, purposed with bridging the gap between MIUI 12 and MIUI 13. And its slight jump in version from 12 to 12.5 testifies to that.

Not much is known about the next generation of MIUI currently. In fact, there barely have been any leaks of any kind. Or at least until now.

On May 26, version 21.05.26.beta of the MIUI Cleaner app went live and its changelog revealed that Xiaomi is already adapting its native applications to the next generation MIUI 13.

1. General development of engines for garbage cleaning
2. Adaptation to the state of the floating window of MIUI 13
3. Fix known issues

Updating the system apps with support for MIUI 13 makes sense considering that Xiaomi obviously won’t be re-creating them from scratch.

The app update also finally proves that Xiaomi is indeed working on the next-gen MIUI 13 update whilst also working hard on rolling out MIUI 12.5 to eligible devices.

While the Cleaner app update changelog doesn’t really help us estimate a release date for MIUI 13, one can still safely assume that the update’s announcement is now closer than ever.
