Pixelworks-powered Always-on HDR on Asus ROG Phone 5 to arrive in a future OTA update

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years, then you know a thing or two about Asus’ ROG Phone line of devices.

These beastly devices from Asus are primarily geared towards gamers and as such, come with the highest-end internals, rugged designs, dedicated cooling systems along with a bunch of extra accessory ports.

The latest iteration of the same, the Asus ROG Phone 5, was first unveiled back in March and it continued this trend, even adding a little display at the back, along with the RGB lights. Really cool stuff.

One area where these dedicated gaming devices haven’t exactly thrived is when it comes to the camera department. These devices’ cameras have often hurt the prospects of otherwise complete devices.

Asus, in recognition of this, wants to change things for the better. It is now coming to light that Asus is turning to a formidable player in the film industry to achieve this.

Pixelworks might not exactly be a commonplace name for the average person but this company is doing big things in Hollywood.

The company has been the creator of award-winning motion picture technology for years now. In the past 20 years, Pixelworks has been innovating in the field of video and display processing, and now, Asus is seeking to employ its expertise.

ROG Phone 5’s official website notes that the device will get the Pixelworks-powered Always-on HDR feature in an upcoming OTA update.

Aside from this footnote, we still don’t have much on the same. However, Pixelworks’ website explains that the Always-on HDR will upscale SDR content to HDR, resulting in better gaming and video consuming experience.

For the vast majority of movies, games and user videos that still exist in Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) format, Pixelworks processors dynamically up-map this content from SDR to HDR for the ultimate, Always-on HDR visual experience.
