New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…

Original story (published on May 27, 2021) follows:

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 is the most ‘junior’ among the Redmi Note 9 series but that doesn’t translate to a lack of features.

The most notable difference between the Pro models and our lil’ champ is that the former all come with Snapdragon 720G processors while the latter comes with the Mediatek Helio G85.

Needless to say, the Helio G85 is a fairly powerful processor with an Antutu score of about 200,000, which isn’t really too far behind the Snapdragon’s score of around 270,000.

Anyway, most users keeping an eye on the Android 11 update’s progress for the Redmi Note 9 series must already be aware of the mess Xiaomi has created with the devices.

Take the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro for example whose Indian variant had bagged Android 11 last year itself but the global variant, the Redmi Note 9S, got a taste of the update several months later.

However, things at the Redmi Note 9 (merlin) camp have been rather quiet and there hasn’t been any trace of any major update being released through the stable beta channel or even through the Pilot Testers program.

That is, until now. The device has finally got a taste of Android 11 through a Mi Pilot Testers build. It’s based on MIUI 12, carries a version number of v12.0.1.0.RJOMIXM, and has been released for global users only.

A changelog hasn’t really been provided but one can expect some minor UI changes.

A download link has also not been given out which makes sense considering that Pilot builds are typically not installable for those that aren’t a part of the Mi Pilot Testers program anyway.

So what does the update mean for users that aren’t a part of the program? Well, Xiaomi usually kickstarts a wider stable release for any major update a couple of weeks after it makes it to the Pilot Testers branch.

But that’s only the best-case scenario that assumes the absence of any major bugs that may hinder a smooth rollout.

Nonetheless, for now, stay tuned to our Xiaomi Android 11 update tracker to track the update’s progress for the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9.
