New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…

Original story (published on May 26, 2021) follows:

The Redmi Note 9 series has to be one of the most confusing lineups from Xiaomi to date. Its roster includes a bunch of devices each named differently depending on the region you’re in.

Take the global variant of the Redmi Note 9 Pro for example that not only has different specs from the Indian Redmi Note 9 Pro but even looks slightly different.

Oddly, the Indian Redmi Note 9 Pro goes by the name of Redmi Note 9S in the rest of the world.

But let’s just focus on the global Redmi Note 9 Pro right now. The device was launched back in April last year and shipped with the latest available software at the time – MIUI 11 based on Android 10.

Since then, it has been updated to MIUI 12. The update was still based on Android 10 though so the wait has been on for Android 11. That has finally come to an end though:

  • Device: Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro
  • Codename: joyeuse
  • Channel: Global Stable
  • Version: 12.0.1.0.RJZMIXM
  • Android: 11
    • Type: Recovery

As many may already be aware, the MIUI OS has been ‘decoupled’ from Android versions so its features are dictated more by the MIUI versions rather than Android versions.

This holds true for the Android 11 update for the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro Global as well. Since it is still based on MIUI 12, it isn’t really a huge jump in terms of features when compared to Android 10.

Still, you should note a few differences like a slightly tweaked Control Center that now supports smart home controls and perhaps some differences to the volume panel and power menu.

Another point worth mentioning here is that since the build above is a Pilot build, it will probably not be installable for users that are not a part of the Mi Pilot Testing program.

But considering the fact that Android 11 has at least finally made it to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro Global, a wider stable rollout shouldn’t be too far off.

Hence, for now, you would want to keep an eye on our dedicated Xiaomi Android 11 update tracker to track its progress.
