MIUI 12.5 beta update 21.5.17 adds option to turn off fingerprint for lock screen & use it only for app lock, payments (Download link inside)

In case you are unaware, Xiaomi has already kickstarted their stable MIUI 12.5 rollouts starting with the Mi 10 Ultra back in March followed by more Chinese variants of flagship-level offerings.

Recently, the update has begun to trickle to the global variants of devices as well. We previously highlighted how the Xiaomi Mi 11 global has been treated to MIUI 12.5 stable.

And it’s not just the flagship-level devices that are receiving the update as the global variants of the Redmi Note 10S and the Redmi Note 10 Pro have now also gotten a taste of MIUI 12.5 stable.

All these releases, however, do not mean that the OEM has done away with their MIUI 12.5 beta program. Beta builds will of course continue to be pushed out at least until MIUI 13 development commences.

We previously highlighted how the MIUI 12.5 beta updates 21.5.11 and 21.5.12 arrived with 6 new Gallery photo editor filters, new gestures, and text selection enhancements.

Xiaomi is known to roll out beta updates several times per week and hence the time has already arrived for a fresh update.

MIUI 12.5 beta updates 21.5.17 and 21.5.18 went live recently with a pretty useful new feature.

Previously, we couldn’t use fingerprint for app lock and secure payments without having to first set it as a mode for lock screen unlocking.

This has changed now with the latest MIUI 12.5 update that has added a new toggle to turn off fingerprint unlock for lock screen and instead use it for payments and app lock alone.

This toggle can be accessed by firstly opening up the Settings app. Next, head over to Passwords & security > Fingerprint unlock where you will find it.

Do keep in mind though that this feature is seemingly only supporting a select list of devices for now including Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G, Redmi K30 Pro, Mi 10 Pro, Mi 10S, Mi 11, Redmi K30S Ultra, Redmi K40, Mi 11 Ultra, Mi 11 Pro, and Redmi K30 Ultra.
