[Updated] OnePlus temporarily removes Android 12 Developer Preview links after users complain of unsuccessful set-up completion

Android 12 is official now! Well, sort of. At Google I/O 2021, Google took the wraps off of its upcoming version of Android, Android 12.

The event went into detail on many of the features we should expect from the new version of Android including a redesigned permissions manager, a refined UI, and Google’s Material You that takes over from Material Design.

Along with that, we saw the release of the initial Developer Preview builds of Android 12 for a bunch of devices from various OEMs including OnePlus.

So the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro will take part in the Android 12 Developer Preview and the initial announcement saw OnePlus releasing the respective builds for the two devices.

In true Beta build fashion, there’s a big problem with the Android 12 Developer Preview builds for the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro (1,2,3,4,5) that makes it impossible for users to set up their units.

As a result, OnePlus has pulled the links to these firmware files and new users can not download them anymore, at least for now.

I’ve temporarily removed the download links based on the feedback from users in this thread. I’m sharing the feedback with the software team so they can look into it in the morning at HQ.

We shall continue to follow this and update as and when we get more info so stay tuned to PiunikaWeb. In the meantime, we wouldn’t advise that you update your device.

I mean, I know why you would want to update your OnePlus 9 to Android 12, you want to have a feel of the newly redesigned Material You.

Users that have somehow managed to install this Developer Preview build on their devices note that the new design isn’t baked into this build.

While still not officially confirmed, chances are that this Material You is a Pixel-exclusive custom Android skin, just like OxygenOS is OnePlus’.

For affected users, there’s still hope. Reports indicate that the bug is associated with Android’s built-in Factory Reset Protection (FRP) that can be bypassed with an unlocked bootloader and OEM Unlock toggled in Developer Settings.

Users stuck on the Android 12 setup process can downgrade to Android 11-based OxygenOS 11, make the above-mentioned changes, and proceed to reinstall Android 12 Developer Preview beta builds on the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro devices.
