Following three Developer Preview builds, Google has finally unveiled the first Android 12 Beta today with an announcement at Google I/O 2021.

The Google Pixel devices have been running Android 12 since the first developer preview builds went live (of course).

With that, Google has once again shown its excellent software support by treating most of its smartphone lineup to the update – all the way back to the Google Pixel 3 that was released with Android Pie.

Nonetheless, similar to last year with Android 11, Google has allowed several OEMs to participate in the beta testing process to allow them to offer the new update to a wider range of devices and sooner than usual.

Of course, with Xiaomi being one of the most popular smartphone OEMs on the planet, the fact that they would partake in the testing process was inevitable.

The OEM has not only joined the program but has included the most number of devices for any non-Google vendor. The list of devices goes – Mi 11 Ultra, Mi 11 Pro (China only), Mi 11, Mi 11i (Mi 11X Pro/Redmi K40 Pro).

While there are some pretty serious bugs like the user below learned the existence of the hard way, there is also plenty of stuff broken within the OS too.

Of course, the presence of such bugs is inherent given the early stage Android 12 currently is.

We have mentioned some of the device-specific issues with the Xiaomi Android 12 beta program so that you’ll know exactly what to expect before making the decision of flashing the ROMs:

[Xiaomi Mi 11]
1. Users have to swipe all the way to the top to unlock the device.
2. There may be instances where the system restarts automatically.
3. Unable to use emergency calls when the screen is locked.
4. Information (such as time and battery) display bug in status bar.

[Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra]
1. Users have to swipe all the way to the top to unlock the devices.
2. The touch point in the bottom navigation bar is a bit lower than the finger position.
3. Small window may pop up when making screen-off calls.
4. Information (such as time and battery) display bug in Status bar.
5. Gallery may stop running when editing videos.

[Xiaomi Mi 11i/Mi 11X Pro]
1. “Earphone” icon doesn’t show in the status bar when the earphone is inserted.
2. Unable to find TV device in Cast.
3. There may be crashes after making an emergency call and checking the call records.

It is unclear at this point if these bugs are a part of AOSP itself or are the kind that Xiaomi needs to fix themselves depending on the device in question.

Still, we will continue tracking the progress of the Xiaomi Android 12 beta program for further developments so be sure to keep an eye on our dedicated Android 12 update tracker.
