New leaks and rumors suggest that Android 12 will be one of the biggest updates the platform has seen recently.

It’s expected that the upcoming OS will bring along a revamped user interface across the board with redesigned toggles, widgets, and more.

And now it seems that Gboard users will be treated with support for wallpaper-based keyboard theming when running on Android 12.

A senior XDA member — RKBD — apparently spotted the new option in the Themes section of Gboard labeled as ‘Device’.

When selected, the Gboard keyboard theme automatically changes based on the colors from the wallpaper.

Here’s a video of the wallpaper-based keyboard theming option in Gboard on Android 12.

As you can see in the video above, the keyboard theme automatically changes by extracting colors from the wallpaper. This works for both light and dark modes.

This new ‘Device’ theme option in Gboard is currently only working on Google Pixel devices running on Android 12 as pointed out by Mishaal Rahman.

If Google does not decide to ditch this for some reason, it’s more than likely that we’ll see the wallpaper-based theming option in Gboard for more devices when Android 12 rolls out officially.

However, the availability of the feature may also depend on whether or not OEMs make it available on their devices.

We say this because the option to theme Gboard with the system accent color is not available on most smartphones even though it was made available with Android 10 as highlighted here.

That said, we’ll post an update if and when we come across any new developments on the same.
