Twitter recently acquired Scroll — a monthly subscription service that removes ads from participating news sites — to likely build its own subscription-based service in the near future.

While Scroll is expected to continue working for existing users as it is, one lesser-known Scroll service called Nuzzel has kicked the bucket.

Nuzzel is, or rather was, a news curating service that sent our emails to users every day of the top stories shared by people in their Twitter feed and was acquired by Scroll in 2019.

The announcement of the shutdown came via an official blog post on the Nuzzel website with the headline “Nuzzel is going away. For Now.”

The site, however, is no longer available and it appears that the app has also been shut down as highlighted by Artem Russakovskii on Twitter.

Now that the Twitter-owned Scroll has shut down Nuzzel, users won’t have access to the daily emails or curated news feed.

In the blog post, Tony Haile — Scroll’s CEO — mentioned that “the only way for Nuzzel to meet the scalability requirements necessary for a company like Twitter was to rebuild the service from scratch.”

And it appears Twitter is indeed looking out for ways to integrate Nuzzel into Twitter and wants users to help them by sharing feedback during the early access stages.

Unfortunately, Twitter has not shared any further details regarding its plans to integrate Nuzzel into the platform. This means that it could take several months before we get to see Nuzzel incorporated into Twitter.

Alternatives to Nuzzel

There are a couple of Nuzzel alternatives that you can try out in the meantime. TweetShelf is one such service that would make Nuzzel fans feel at home.

The app is available on the Android and iOS platforms and gives you recommendations of News, Books, Podcasts and Videos from your Twitter friends. You can even view Twitter based on content type.

Apart from that, you can even use Feedly as a replacement for Nuzzel, however, the steps to get things set up are a bit more involving and time-consuming as highlighted here.

Of course, there are other apps for Twitter such as Owly that give you quick access to the latest news but they aren’t exactly replacements for Nuzzel.

Having said that, feel free to share your thoughts regarding the shut down of Nuzzel by Scroll — now acquired by Twitter — in the comments section below.
