To say that Redmi Note 9 Pro users have been frustrated with regards to the Android 11 update would be an understatement. After all, Xiaomi has messed up big time with this particular device.
The first Android 11 rollouts for the Note 9 Pro had begun late last year itself which is pretty timely for a budget device. However, the update only made it to select users following which the rollout was halted abruptly.
Since then, a wider release has been delayed over and over again, month by month until almost 5 months have passed. The last known status was that the update is in its final testing stage and would be released by April-end.
However, we are already a week past that deadline and there’s still no sign of the update. We sure do hope that it’s just around the corner though.
But amongst all this bleakness, some good news has come to light. A community moderator has confirmed that the Redmi Note 9 Pro is indeed eligible for the Android 12 update.
This raises the question – has Xiaomi made a minimum of two Android updates the new standard? Hard to say at this point considering that Xiaomi doesn’t really have a structured update policy for all to see.
But judging from the fact that the Redmi Note 8 series is set to receive two Android updates, the Redmi Note 9 series should be treated similarly. FYI, the Redmi Note 8 was released with Android Pie and is now running Android 11.
What we can say with certainty though is that Xiaomi is keen on shedding their “single Android update only” image and is committing to two Android updates even on most of their budget devices.
This becomes pretty clear when we look at how the Redmi Note 7 series only received one Android update before reaching EOL but the number has been bumped up to two with the Redmi Note 8 series.
It still remains to be seen that if this increase in the total number of updates is valid for the recently released entry-level devices like the Poco C3 as well, although we doubt that’s the case.
But we sure are hopeful that Xiaomi will eventually make two Android updates the bare minimum standard.
For now, while you await both the Android 11 and Android 12 updates for the Redmi Note 9 Pro/Pro Max, be sure to check out our dedicated Android 12 update tracker for info on all its upcoming features.
