[Update: Workaround] OnePlus 7 Pro users on OxygenOS 11 (Android 11) Open Beta facing call audio from wrong speaker issue

OnePlus used to be the gold standard when it comes to updates. While this has since faded over the past year or so, the company is still pushing to roll out timely updates to its devices.

Android 11 has been around since way back in September 2020 and most OEMs are now rolling out their respective custom Android skins to their eligible devices. Check out our dedicated Android 11 tracker for more on this.

OnePlus already rolled out OxygenOS 11 to the OnePlus 8 series of devices and currently, it is in its advanced stages of testing out this build on the OnePlus 7 and 7T series of devices.

Recently, we saw the rollout of the second Open Beta of Android 11-based OxygenOS 11 to the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7T devices and with that came a few enhancements and refinements ahead of the stable release.

As expected, there were a few ‘guests’ in form of bugs. And this is no surprise owing to the sheer number of bugs and issues we’ve seen in OxygenOS 11 builds for other devices.

However, this one is a little more dire, even for a developmental build such as this Open Beta release. A section of OnePlus 7 Pro users report that they’re having call audio issues on their devices.

Is anyone having weird audio issues with Beta 2? I just received a call and the sound was coming out of the bottom speaker, not the earpiece. I didn’t have speaker on.

Am I the only one having phone call audio issues on OnePlus 7 Pro? Call sound sometimes comes out of both the bottom speaker and the ear speaker. Other times it only comes out of the bottom speaker. This is not on speaker setting. Also, people at the other end are telling me there’s a really bad echo.

According to these users, their OnePlus 7 Pro units tend to emit call sounds through the bottom speaker instead of the earpiece. As a result, callers on the other end of the line report a lot of echo.

In a few other cases, affected users note that switching the call to speaker mode then activates the earpiece speaker and toggling it again does the opposite.

When using the phone app, the normal earpiece speaker is used for speakerphone, and the speaker on the bottom of the phone is used for phone mode. In other words, the app uses the wrong speakers for both modes.

As it turns out, this issue has been present since the initial Android 11 Open Beta for OxygenOS 11 (Android 11) for the OnePlus 7 and users were hoping to get some relief with this second Open Beta.

In the meantime, reports from affected users continue to trickle in (1,2,3,4,5,6,7) and we can only hope to have the issue resolved before the official stable release is rolled out.

We shall continue to keep an eye on these and many other reported OxygenOS 11 bugs and issues and update as and when we get info on fixes and workarounds so stay tuned.

IST: 09:11 am: Well, thanks to the power of community, there is a way to work around this issue for affected users.

Settings, System, Accessibility, Hearing Aid Compatibility: On

For some reason this fixed the bug that has been with us since early betas of Android 11. Still no official word from OnePlus despite dozens of people submitting bug reports for months now. At least now I can reliably have phone calls again.
