Some Google Nest Hello users say the coating is peeling off their doorbells; issue likely a design flaw

Out of all smart home products, video doorbells are some of the most useful ones. And the Nest Hello from Google is considered to be one of the better video doorbells you can get your hands on.

This sleek device differs itself from most other common smart doorbells by offering face recognition technology to help identify people at your doorstep, amongst other things.

While that’s all good, it appears that many Google Nest Hello doorbell users have started noticing that the plastic coating is peeling off their units.

Those who’ve noticed the problem have taken to Google’s support community to seek help. We’ve shared some reports from affected users for reference below:

The front of my Nest Doorbell is peeling off badly. I think it will no longer be waterproof now. I am in the UK and chat and telephone support is not working. It is not the thin plastic cover that you need to remove. I removed that before installing. (Source)

My Nest Hello is six months out of warranty and then hard plastic is peeling off the front. Looking on the forums this is a really common issue but I’ve just been fobbed off by Customer Support as it’s not in warranty. (Source)

Some users have even shared images of the actual condition of their units. Here’s one such example:

It’s worth pointing out that the problem has been around for a couple of years now and we’ve come across reports dating back to 2019.

Although back then, users with Google Nest Hello models from 2018 were able to get their units replaced thanks to the valid warranty.

But now that the warranty isn’t valid, individuals with Nest Hello units from which the plastic coating has just started peeling off now have to cough up cash to get replacements, which is concerning, to say the least.

For a product that was designed for outdoor use, the Nest Hello does not live up to the mark considering the fact that the coating started peeling off a couple or so years ago.

More so, a Platinum Product Expert in the community has even voiced their opinion stating that the issue might be due to a design flaw. Here’s their complete response regarding the issue.

At the time of writing, the plastic coating peeling off the Google Nest Hello does not appear to cause any usability issues. However, several users have pointed out that it may lead to water damage in the long run.

For the time being, you may want to consider investing in a silicone case or cover to keep the device in mint condition for longer.

Although, it’s still disappointing to get a sub-par product considering the Nest Hello’s hefty price tag. As usual, we’ll keep track of the situation and will post an update if and when more details emerge.
