One of the greatest perks of AMOLED displays is their ability to display deep blacks whilst barely consuming any power at all. This has allowed features like always-on display to emerge.

For those living under a rock, AOD keeps the display on even when the phone is locked and presents useful information and notifications without the need for a user to interact with the device.

This information typically is comprised of the time of course and occasionally the weather too.

But things do not always have to be this boring. The ever-growing battery capacities allow more and more pixels to be left on in an always-on display which opens up a new avenue of AOD customizability.

In the past couple of years or so, we have seen OEMs incorporate extensive theming/customizability features in always-on displays allowing colorful patterns, various fonts, and whatnot.

And one of these customizability features is edge lighting that does exactly what its name implies – lights up or blinks the edges of a phone’s display whenever a notification arrives.

This useful feature unfortunately is broken on several Xiaomi devices going by a few reports. Users state that the edge lighting is not working even when enabled on MIUI 12.

One of the latest offerings from Xiaomi – the Redmi Note 10 – is affected too. Now, we did highlight in the past that the Redmi Note 10 series had an issue with AOD wherein the screen shut off in just 10 seconds.

Could that be related? We are not too sure. But what we do know is that a Mi Community mod has acknowledged the issue and confirmed that several Xiaomi devices are affected.

Unfortunately, there isn’t any workaround available as of now. You are free to try the one we have given in our above-mentioned previous coverage (turning off MIUI optimization), but that isn’t guaranteed to work.

Nonetheless, we will continue tracking the MIUI 12 edge lighting not working issue and update this article accordingly. Be sure to keep an eye on our dedicated MIUI 12 bug tracker in the meantime.
