Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp recently suffered an outage and millions of users across the globe got affected because of the same.
However, the outage also led many users to head over to a competitor instant messaging app i.e., Signal.
The cross-platform messaging service started way back in 2014 and is available for numerous platforms like iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, and Linux.
A tweet from the official Signal Twitter handle outlined that due to the Facebook outage, new registrations on the Signal app skyrocketed.
This is only natural as heavy WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram users needed a platform to keep up with their social media presence.
It must be noted that while instant messaging apps like Signal, Telegram, and WhatsApp may be thriving in terms of user base, they do not necessarily generate significant revenue.
This is why the likes of Telegram are opting for selling ads and other premium services to users and businesses. More on that here.
Nevertheless, a regular user of such apps has little to do with these matters and looks forward to an uninterrupted experience.
This is why when such outages occur, users generally try to find a similar platform which satisfies their requirements.
Signal is developed by a non-profit organization i.e., Signal Technology Foundation. This further means that the messaging app practically runs on donations.
So, registration surges like this might prove to be helpful in the future given that Signal developers are able to provide users what they are looking for.
That said, we will be back with more such stories as and when new information becomes available so stay tuned.
