Google Meet to add support for inter-school video calls & meeting transcripts later this year

Google Meet keeps getting better with each update, but that’s not a guarantee. At times, there are some issues that pop up here and there — issues that often get addressed sooner or later.

Just this week, for instance, the search giant pushed a new update that enabled support for tiled view on Meet for iOS, with Android users next in line.

Over the same period, we also reported about issues with Quick Access turning back on automatically for some users and a few others missing breakout rooms on their tablets.

Today, we have some more interesting news to share, this time from Google. In a guide to Google Meet for parents and guardians, the search giant does confirm several features are in the pipeline.

We already knew about the release of Emoji reactions and even support for multiple hosts, with Google confirming that future updates should enable these features for Meet users.

And now, in yet another statement, Google says it is lining up new settings for educators that will bring support for inter-school video calls in Meet.

Apparently, school leaders will be able to determine whether members of their school can join Google Meet video calls from other schools. Google says this feature is coming soon, but no exact date.

Educators can now mute everyone on the call at once so they can keep class on track. And coming soon, we’ll be launching new settings for school leaders to set policies for who can join their school’s video calls, and whether people from their school can join video calls from other schools.

Similarly, Google also notes that a future Meet update will introduce support for meeting transcripts so that students who missed class for some reason can still stay up to date with the rest.

Later this year, meeting transcripts can help students who weren’t able to attend class stay up to date.

Of course, users can already turn to solutions such as the Google Meet Transcripts extension for similar purposes, but having a built-in option should be a welcome move.

Besides, we all know what can happen with 3rd-party extensions support in Google Meet, at least if the Grid View extension saga is anything to go by.
