Xiaomi’s Redmi ‘K’ series is well known for its ‘flagship killer’ offerings that aren’t too dissimilar from the Poco F1. The first model under the umbrella of the ‘K’ name — Redmi K20 Pro — had seen huge success due to its top-of-the-line specs at ridiculously low rates.

Following that initial release, we have also seen the likes of the Redmi K30 Pro show up carrying a flagship Snapdragon processor just like its predecessor. A year has passed since then and it is now time for a new launch.

The Redmi K40 and K40 Pro were released in select regions on March 4 which is the same day the Redmi Note 10 series was officially announced.

Both variants have a pretty premium spec sheet with the Pro model continuing the tradition of carrying a flagship processor, this time the latest and greatest Snapdragon 888.

Nonetheless, the devices come with MIUI 12 based on Android 11 out of the box which means that the wait is already on for MIUI 12.5. The latest iteration of MIUI has seen some pretty active development lately with new builds being released on almost a daily basis.

Although these releases usually always came with some cool new features, this trend has recently seen a dip with the builds now focusing more on enhancing and optimizing existing stuff.

This tendency was pretty expected though since the first stable releases are expected to roll out the very next month.

Anyway, the good news is that the Redmi K40 and the K40 Pro are now going to be a part of a similar beta testing program as enjoyed by the rest of the MIUI 12.5-eligible devices.

Internal test builds will be released next week onwards regularly until stable MIUI 12.5 arrives, hopefully by early Q2 2021.

It is worth mentioning here that the Redmi Note 10 Pro has been announced as one of the first devices to bag MIUI 12.5 stable and hence the K40 series should be treated similarly.

This isn’t the only good news regarding the K40 lineup though as Xiaomi has also released the Android 11 kernel source code for the same. This means that custom ROM development should commence soon.
