New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…

Original story (published on March 01, 2021) follows:

Xiaomi had announced back in January last year that they had partnered with Oppo and Vivo to bring innovative new wireless file transfer technologies to consumers in global markets.

This was part of the three companies’ initiative dubbed “Peer-to-Peer Transmission Alliance” that was designed to allow a seamless cross-brand file transfer with just a single click.

The goal was to provide an unparalleled file transfer experience supporting a wide range of types like documents, photos, videos, music, and more without the need for any third-party applications or network data consumption.

The feature makes use of several technologies like Wi-Fi P2P (Peer to Peer) for transfers and Bluetooth for fast pairing. With these, it could support data transfer speeds of around 20 MB/s.

It was rolled out with MIUI 11 through the Mi Share app that comes built-in on Xiaomi devices. To read more about it all, you might want to check out this blog post.

Of course, third-party apps have existed in the past that function quite similarly like Xender, SHAREit, InShare, and countless others. However, the process involved to get a pair of devices ready for file transfer was slow and tedious.

Moreover, Apple has had an extremely efficient method of file transfer called AirDrop for years. Something that Android has been lacking since the very beginning.

Google eventually did take note of this shortcoming and introduced Nearby Share with Android 10. However, by then, Xiaomi’s file-sharing tech was already ahead in the game.

The only disadvantage with the oh-so-fancy-sounding “Peer-to-Peer Transmission Alliance” tech was that it only allowed transfers between Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi devices.

However, it is clear that Xiaomi did not want to settle for less and had even left things a bit open-ended with their announcement wherein they had invited more brands to take part in the initiative.

The efforts have finally begun to pay off as Mi Share has now added support for file transfers to several new brands namely ZTE, Hisense, Asus, and ROG devices with the latest app update carrying version number 1.4.1.

This APK was pulled from MIUI 12.5 beta v21.2.26 and was hence probably introduced with the update too. It may not work on global ROMs. But if you still wish to give it a try, then you can do so on your Xiaomi device running MIUI by downloading it from here.

Hopefully, we will see even more brands added to Mi Share in the future. For now, be sure to keep an eye on our dedicated MIUI 12.5 update tracker.

Update 1 (June 18)

01:08 pm (IST): The latest set of MIUI 12.5 beta builds introduced the Mi Share app update v1.4.7 that also adds support for Samsung devices. For more details and download link, head here.
