OnePlus 8T has had a few too many issues in the few months that it has been in the market. While this could partly be attributed to the drastic changes in OxygenOS 11, it is not uncommon for new devices to have such issues.

We have been closely following many of these issues and you might want to check out our tracker for the ones that have since been fixed.

Not too long ago, we looked at an issue afflicting users of the OnePlus 8T, an issue that affected the device’s camera ability to focus.

It is now coming to light that there is yet another issue with the same device, a similar issue that affects the camera’s ability to focus on objects in close-range.

Users have noted that their OnePlus 8T has a camera issue surrounding the autofocus function. According to them, the device fails to focus on a subject automatically, resulting in blurry photos.

This issue has been reported for both the rear and the selfie cameras on the OnePlus 8T. Below are some of the sample shots submitted by affected users.

The camera is unable to focus on words written on an object. The words seems blurry.

This issue has been reported by a number of users of OnePlus 8T (1,2,3,4), so much so that it even made its way to OnePlus’ January 2021 FAQs for HydrogenOS.

In response to this issue, OnePlus goes on to explain what is happening in certain situations where users have complained that the OnePlus 8T is unable to focus on close range.

The statement reads in part:

Q: Why the OnePlus 8T cannot focus at close range when using the main camera?

A: When shooting at close range, the light or the texture of the object may affect the autofocus algorithm, making it impossible to find the focus point stably. If you need to focus at close range, you can use manual focus in professional mode or open super macro to shoot.

If after trying the above methods, you still have the problem of being unable to auto-focus at close range on OnePlus 8T, please submit bug feedback in the community feedback area and provide the original film you shot.

So what happens to users that are facing auto-focus issues on their OnePlus 8T units, especially when trying to take close-up shots?

Well, from the above statement, users trying to use their OnePlus 8T cameras in this way can use manual focus in professional mode or open super macro mode to shoot.

This still does not explain the issues where users note that their devices do not respond to touch-to-focus and instead, insist on auto-focusing, which still leads to blurry photos.

While OnePlus has done a really good job when it comes to fixing and addressing many of the issues its users are facing, this one needs to get addressed soon as the camera performance is one of the issues holding back the OnePlus 8T against the competition.
