Android 11 update for Sony Xperia 1, Xperia 5, Xperia 1 II, Xperia 5 II & Xperia 10 II to fix apps not closing issue on Android 10

The first Sony phone to get the update to Android 11 was the Xperia 1 II — its flagship for 2020 — back in December.

However, the update is yet to be released to Xperia 1 II users in certain regions such as the U.S.

It was speculated that the company halted the rollout due to bugs that came to light after some users installed the update on their devices. More on this here.

That said, Sony started seeding Android 11 to the original Xperia 5 and Xperia 1 models yesterday, ahead of the official plan for a Feburary release.

Unfortunately, the smartphone vendor has not shared a detailed changelog for the new software update.

So apart from the usual Android 11 features and improvements, it’s not clear what else Sony has added, removed, or fixed with this new software update.

However, according to information shared on Sony’s official website, the update to Android 11 will apparently fix the apps not closing issue that apparently popped up after users installed Android 10.

The issue exists on the Xperia 1, Xperia 5, Xperia 10 Plus, Xperia 10, Xperia 1 II, Xperia 5 II, and the Xperia 10 II as per Sony’s site.

As a “solution”, the smartphone maker has suggested users who aren’t able to close apps via recents screen to go to the home screen directly rather than tapping on the back button or using the back gesture.

Then, users can open up the recents screen and swipe up to dismiss the running application(s). We’ve shared a screenshot of the solution/workaround from Sony below:

Unfortunately, we have not come across any reports from Sony Xperia users who have experienced the apps not closing issue after updating to Android 10.

But considering that the company created a dedicated support article for the issue, it’s likely a known bug and will thankfully be fixed with the update to Android 11.

Granted that Android 11 has just started rolling out to users, we may have to wait a while before we get any confirmation regarding whether the apps not closing issue was fixed on affected Sony Xperia smartphones.
