New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….
Original story (published on December 23, 2020) follows:
Asus has left some of its ZenFone users in the cold as their devices still await a stable Android 10 update at a time when a newer version of the OS is doing rounds.
Asus has done nothing more than either patching some improvements as monthly updates or releasing a botched up Android 10 beta. Even the beta updates are not worth upgrading to.
While other OEMs are quickly upgrading their devices to Android 11, Asus has failed to come to grips with the Android 10 beta problems.
The affected lot consists of ZenFone Max Pro M1/M2 duo, ZenFone Max M1/M2, and even the ZenFone 5 and ZenFone Live L1/L2, all of whom have been left yearning for the stable Android 10 for months now.
Asus ZenFone Max M1/M2 Android 10 is still proving elusive and if the latest reports were to be believed, the ZenFone Max Pro series may not get the stable update for Android 10, at least not in Asus’ immediate plans.
Well, this story becomes the polar opposite when it comes to custom ROM developments. There’s enough attention for Asus devices in the developer community.
But the road to active development was never a smooth sail either. Asus took a long time to release kernel sources for these devices and when they finally did, developers made sure there weren’t any further delays.
The good news for the Asus ZenFone Max M1 and Asus ZenFone Max M2 users is that developers are way past the Android 10 era and have started releasing Android 11 builds for the devices.
Pixel Experience, an AOSP-based custom ROM, has finally released Android 11 beta ROMS for both the ZenFone Max M1 and ZenFone Max M2.
We have the download links up ready if you’d like to have the first taste of the Android 11 experience.

However, as the changelog notes, these are the initial Android R builds and may contain bugs and issues. But now that the development has kick-started, improvements will surely be made.
This comes as a breather for device users who were experiencing hardships all this time. Looking forward to custom ROM development is the only wise thing affected ZenFone series users can do for now.
In the meantime, you can check out our Asus Android 10 update tracker in case Asus makes up its mind to drop the stable Android 10 update.
