Redmi Note 8 is a device that has helped Xiaomi earn enormous gains in the global smartphone market. Sales were good enough to put the device in the list of others eligible for MIUI 12 update.
Xiaomi is just about done rolling out MIUI 12 updates and attention is now shifting to MIUI 12.5. However, the Redmi Note 8 MIUI 12 software update track hasn’t been quite impressive in general.
Xiaomi is known to pack more features in its in-house MIUI updates. Sure, devices do get Android OS updates, but not at the same rate as MIUI updates.
We will have to agree that the company has lived up to its promise of providing MIUI 12 update but that comes with its own flaws and downsides.
Xiaomi started rolling out MIUI 12 for the device in late September starting with China. Global users, as always, were left gawking for a month, and then finally the MIUI 12 update arrived for global units at the end of October.
As soon as the update arrived, there came an influx of reports of an issue preventing users to upgrade to MIUI 12. This issue was affecting users on Global MIUI 11.0.11 by not letting them install the MIUI 12 update.
So, Redmi Note 8 Global users were once again lined up in a long queue of issue acknowledgment, wait for the bug fix and stable release of MIUI 12.
This was followed by a rollout and rollback episode of another attempt by Xiaomi with MIUI 12.0.2. This added more fuel to the already fuming users.
However, Xiaomi was quick to acknowledge the issue and released another MIUI 11-based update so to make sure past episodes don’t repeat. This update was masked as MIUI 11.0.12 and was only meant for devices on the peculiar MIUI 11.0.11 build.
It has already been 3 months of waiting, and no big developments were seen until today. We finally see some ray of hope coming with regards to the global Redmi Note 8 MIUI 12 update but also adds a few more weeks to the calendar.
A forum moderator has finally spoken on the much-awaited timeline. He says:
Dear user, MIUI 12 Global update is expected to be released in the 1st week of Jan (if everything goes well). Stay tuned to mi global community for further info.
Thanks
This comes with a sigh of relief for the users who have been struggling since July. But again, this shouldn’t be considered as an official announcement as mods and even high-level officials have been inaccurate in the past, particularly for Redmi Note 8.
What happens in January is still uncertain, what’s certain is that this device is headed into the year 2021 with Android 9 based MIUI 11.
There’s also some good news which should compensate for the MIUI 12 damage. Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 and its sister devices have already entered the Android 11 testing phase.
Expecting a timeline will only lead to a road full of disappointments. All we can hope is that Xiaomi presents a stable update that should have been pushed along ago.
That said, we will continue to track developments from Xiaomi and provide our readers with the latest information.
